Everything You Need to Know About the Upcoming "Avatar" Sequels

Director James Cameron has committed to delivering a total of four 'Avatar' sequels, with the first one being 'Avatar: The Way of Water,' set to release in 2022.

Similar to his approach with previous Avatar projects, James Cameron has kept details about the plot of Avatar 3 under wraps. However, in an interview with France’s 20 Minutes in early 2023, Cameron did disclose a crucial detail about the movie. He mentioned that the upcoming sequel will focus on a new race of people embodying another element.

Originally slated for a December 2024 release, Avatar 3 underwent a schedule change by Disney, affecting the premiere dates for various film franchises such as Star Wars, Avengers, and the Avatar sequels. As a result, Avatar 3 is now set to hit theaters in December 2025, with subsequent films in the series scheduled for releases in 2029 and 2031.

Avatar 3 has completed filming and is currently in the post-production phase. In a departure from the conventional approach, James Cameron chose to film Avatar 2 and 3 simultaneously.

Has the filming for Avatar 3 been completed?

He explained to Entertainment Weekly in December 2022 that this decision was made to prevent the teenage actors from aging too much between the films, drawing a comparison to the challenge faced by the popular Netflix series Stranger Things. Cameron expressed his concern about characters intended to be in high school appearing much older in subsequent installments.
