Greta Gerwig Earns Her Inaugural Best Director Golden Globe Nomination for 'Barbie'

Barbie director Greta Gerwig secured her first-ever Best Director Golden Globe nomination on Monday, finally earning recognition after being overlooked in previous years for her films Lady Bird and Little Women.

Gerwig’s nomination puts her in the company of other notable directors such as Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Celine Song (Past Lives), Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Bradley Cooper (Maestro), and Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things). Additionally, Gerwig, along with Noah Baumbach, received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Barbie. In total, Barbie amassed nine nominations, spanning categories like Best Musical or Comedy, Best Actress for Margot Robbie, and Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling.

Throughout the history of the Golden Globes, only nine women have received nominations for directing. Barbra Streisand, Chloe Zhao, and Jane Campion are the sole women to have won the award. Streisand made history by winning in 1984 for Yentl, becoming the first woman to achieve this milestone.

In 2014, Greta Gerwig earned a nomination for her performance in Frances Ha, and in 2018, she received another nod for her screenplay of Little Women.
